The Free Bridge or Garrison Avenue Bridge extended from Fort Smith to the Oklahoma border over the Arkansas River. This photo postcard of the bridge looks west into Oklahoma from Fort Smith during the flood of 1927. The Missouri Pacific Railroad pushed 25 cars of coal onto the bridge to keep it from being swept away by the flood waters. |
