First Christian Church was founded in 1854. It was located at North Sixth Street between North C and D streets. Efforts to expand and complete the church were suspended as a result of the civil war in 1861, then renewed and completed in 1870. A new building was completed in 1886 to accommodate a larger and growing congregation, and the sanctuary building shown here was built in 1903. In 1961, a six-acre tract was purchased at 3600 Free Ferry Road and Rogers Avenue at a cost of $97,500. Ground breaking services were held in August 1965 and dedication ceremonies on  June 20,1966.
