Benjamin Bonneville (1796 to 1878) lived in this house in the latter part of his life. Later, it served as the clubhouse for the Rolling Knolls golf course along North O Street. A native of France, Bonneville was a Army officer, a trapper and an explorer. The residence commonly called the Bonneville House on North Seventh Street in Fort Smith was the home of his young widow, Sue Neis Bonneville, shortly after his death. His first wife and daughter died in St. Louis of contagious illnesses during the Civil War.
