The north building of the Arkansas Coffin Company faced Falconer Street (South 31st Street today) in South Fort Smith. A brick "south building" was built perpindicular to it later, forming an L-shaped footprint. The brick south building was connected to the north one and was reportedly built around the old wooden structure pictured here. Once its brick exterior was complete, the wooden one was taken apart on the inside. The line of the trolley that served South Fort Smith or Southtown ended right in front of the coffin company. From the early years of the 20th century until 1989, the company sold coffins in a six-state region around Fort Smith. Sometime in the 1950s, it changed its name to the Arkansas Casket Company, although the "Coffin Company" name remained on the building's exterior. Today it is used as a warehouse. |
