The Fort Smith Historical Society had a called meeting on June 11, 2004, in the Rose Room at Creekmore Park. There were 10 members present. The purpose of the meeting was to decide whether or not we could afford to maintain an office. Jack Arnold called the meeting to order. Joanne Swofford gave a report comparing Society finances for 2002, 2003, and 5 months of 2004. Jack asked for discussion about the pros and cons of maintaining an office. We will need to pay insurance and a portion of the utilities. We have needed an office for years to get the journal print ready, and to organize and store materials for future journals. The savings on printing costs will almost pay office expenses. Also, gifts made to the Society can help with costs. There was discussion of asking the city to help with funding. The request for CBID funds must be in by July 1st. There was discussion of equipment that we will need to produce the journal, such as a dictaphone, recorder, scanner, software, and a digital video camera to use on interviews. There was a motion that we sign the lease and approach the city for CBID funds. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously. Also, there was a motion that we place a $5,000.00 limit on funds used to purchase equipment. That motion was seconded and passed unanimously. It was decided that we wlll keep our post office box, since the Journal office will not be staffed on a regular basis. The next regular meeting is scheduled at 2:30 on July 22, 2004, in the Rose Room at Creekmore Park. The meeting was adjourned by the president. Chloe Lamon, Recording Secretary. |
